Colossians 2:23 meaning and explanation
Such restrictions indeed have an appearance of wisdom, with their self-prescribed worship, their false humility, and their harsh treatment of the body; but they are of no value against the indulgence of the flesh.
Colossians 2:23, Berean Standard Bible
Explanation preview
Paul closes an argument begun in verse 16, writing to a church he never visited (verse 1) that faced teachers adding rules about food, festivals and harsh bodily discipline. He grants that such restrictions look wise, with their self-chosen worship, false humility and severity toward the body, yet they are worthless against the flesh, the Greek sarx, meaning self-centered human desire that rules cannot cure.
