Daniel 5:18 meaning and explanation

As for you, O king, the Most High God gave your father Nebuchadnezzar sovereignty and greatness, glory and honor.

Daniel 5:18, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Daniel is speaking to King Belshazzar in Babylon, beginning his interpretation of the writing on the wall by recalling Belshazzar's predecessor Nebuchadnezzar, called his father in the sense of ancestor or royal predecessor. Daniel insists that Nebuchadnezzar's sovereignty, greatness, glory and honor were not his own achievements but gifts from the Most High God, a title for God as ruler over all earthly kingdoms.
