Deuteronomy 2:34 meaning and explanation

At that time we captured all his cities and devoted to destruction the people of every city, including women and children. We left no survivors.

Deuteronomy 2:34, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Moses recounts Israel's defeat of Sihon, king of Heshbon, whose army came out against them at Jahaz (verses 32 and 33). The Hebrew verb haram means to devote something entirely to God, and in this war setting it meant total destruction, with no persons kept as plunder; Israel kept only livestock and goods (verse 35).
