Deuteronomy 23:7 meaning and explanation

Do not despise an Edomite, for he is your brother. Do not despise an Egyptian, because you lived as a foreigner in his land.

Deuteronomy 23:7, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Moses is speaking to Israel on the plains of Moab, setting out who may belong to the LORD's assembly. Verses 3 to 6 exclude Ammonites and Moabites, but verse 7 draws a line: Edomites are kin, descended from Jacob's brother Esau, and Egyptians must be treated with restraint because Israel once lived as resident foreigners (Hebrew ger) among them.
