Deuteronomy 24:6 meaning and explanation

Do not take a pair of millstones or even an upper millstone as security for a debt, because that would be taking one’s livelihood as security.

Deuteronomy 24:6, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Moses is speaking to Israel as they prepare to enter the promised land, setting out case laws for ordinary life. A millstone was the household tool for grinding grain into flour each day, so taking one as a pledge on a loan would leave a family unable to make bread.
