Deuteronomy 24:7 meaning and explanation
If a man is caught kidnapping one of his Israelite brothers, whether he treats him as a slave or sells him, the kidnapper must die. So you must purge the evil from among you.
Deuteronomy 24:7, Berean Standard Bible
Explanation preview
Moses is addressing the Israelites as they prepare to enter the promised land, setting out laws for the community's life together. Kidnapping a fellow Israelite and selling him into slavery was a capital offense, because it treated a covenant brother as property and repeated the very evil Egypt had inflicted on Israel.
