Deuteronomy 28:43 meaning and explanation

The foreigner living among you will rise higher and higher above you, while you sink down lower and lower.

Deuteronomy 28:43, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Moses is speaking to Israel on the plains of Moab, setting before the people the blessings of covenant obedience and the curses of covenant breaking. Verse 43 falls within the curses, and it reverses the ordinary order of things: the foreigner, the resident alien who had no inherited land, climbs higher and higher, while the Israelite sinks lower and lower.
