Deuteronomy 31:23 meaning and explanation

Then the LORD commissioned Joshua son of Nun and said, “Be strong and courageous, for you will bring the Israelites into the land that I swore to give them, and I will be with you.”

Deuteronomy 31:23, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

At the Tent of Meeting, with the pillar of cloud over the entrance, the LORD commissions Joshua to succeed Moses, who has been told he will die before entering Canaan. The charge to be strong and courageous rests not on Joshua's ability but on God's promise, "I will be with you." The Hebrew word chazaq, meaning to be strong or firm, echoes Moses' words to Israel in verse 6.
