Deuteronomy 5:3 meaning and explanation

He did not make this covenant with our fathers, but with all of us who are alive here today.

Deuteronomy 5:3, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Moses is speaking to the assembled Israelites on the plains of Moab, retelling the covenant made at Horeb, another name for Sinai. The "fathers" here are the patriarchs and the generation that came out of Egypt but died in the wilderness; the covenant at Sinai was not a distant ancestral memory but a living obligation for the people standing before him.
