Deuteronomy 5:4 meaning and explanation

The LORD spoke with you face to face out of the fire on the mountain.

Deuteronomy 5:4, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Moses is speaking to the assembled Israelites on the plains of Moab, recalling the day at Horeb, also called Sinai, when the LORD gave the Ten Commandments. The phrase "face to face" does not mean the people literally saw God's face, since verse 5 explains that Moses stood between the LORD and the people because they were afraid of the fire.
