Ecclesiastes 12:8 meaning and explanation

“Futility of futilities,” says the Teacher. “Everything is futile!”

Ecclesiastes 12:8, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

The Teacher, the speaker of Ecclesiastes, closes his long search for meaning by returning to the phrase that opened the book (1:2). Having traced old age and death in the verses just before, he sums up life "under the sun" apart from God: hevel, a Hebrew word for vapor or breath, rendered here as futility.
