Ecclesiastes 7:15 meaning and explanation

In my futile life I have seen both of these: A righteous man perishing in his righteousness, and a wicked man living long in his wickedness.

Ecclesiastes 7:15, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

The Teacher, the voice of Ecclesiastes, speaks from his own long observation of life "under the sun." He has watched two things that upset any tidy equation of virtue with reward: a righteous person dying in his integrity, and a wicked person prolonging his life in evil. This is not a denial of God's justice but an honest report that outcomes in this fleeting life (the Hebrew hevel, often rendered "futile" or "vapor," means breathlike transience) do not always match character.
