Exodus 6:3 meaning and explanation

I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob as God Almighty, but by My name the LORD I did not make Myself known to them.

Exodus 6:3, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

God is speaking to Moses in Egypt, after Pharaoh has made the Israelites' labor harsher and Moses has protested that his mission failed. God answers by identifying Himself: He appeared to the patriarchs as El Shaddai, usually translated God Almighty, but did not make His name Yahweh, rendered LORD in this Bible, known to them.
