Ezekiel 18:19 meaning and explanation

Yet you may ask, ‘Why shouldn’t the son bear the iniquity of his father?’ Since the son has done what is just and right, carefully observing all My statutes, he will surely live.

Ezekiel 18:19, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Ezekiel is answering exiles in Babylon who felt punished for their parents' sins, quoting a proverb about sour grapes (verse 2). Here God through the prophet addresses their objection directly: a son who does what is just and right, keeping God's statutes, will not be held guilty for his father's wrongdoing.
