Galatians 3:19 meaning and explanation

Why then was the law given? It was added because of transgressions, until the arrival of the seed to whom the promise referred. It was administered through angels by a mediator.

Galatians 3:19, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Paul has just argued that the law cannot cancel God's promise to Abraham, so he asks why the law was given at all. His answer is that it was added later, alongside the promise rather than replacing it, to expose transgressions until the promised offspring, Christ, arrived.
