Galatians 5:17 meaning and explanation

For the flesh craves what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are opposed to each other, so that you do not do what you want.

Galatians 5:17, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Paul writes to Gentile believers in Galatia who face pressure to add circumcision and law-keeping to their faith. Here he describes the ongoing conflict every believer knows: the flesh, the fallen human nature bent toward self, craves what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit resists the flesh.
