Matthew 26:41 meaning and explanation

“Watch and pray so that you will not enter into temptation. For the spirit is willing, but the body is weak.”

Matthew 26:41, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Jesus speaks these words in Gethsemane, after finding Peter and the others asleep instead of keeping watch with Him in His anguish. The command joins alertness to prayer: watching means staying awake to the danger, and praying means asking God for strength rather than trusting willpower.
