Genesis 1:10 meaning and explanation

God called the dry land “earth,” and the gathering of waters He called “seas.” And God saw that it was good.

Genesis 1:10, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

On the third day of creation, God gathers the waters so dry land appears, then names the dry land "earth" and the gathered waters "seas." In the ancient world, naming something meant claiming authority over it, so God's naming shows His rule over what He has made. The Hebrew word for earth, erets, can mean land or ground, the place where life will be lived.
