Genesis 1:9 meaning and explanation

And God said, “Let the waters under the sky be gathered into one place, so that the dry land may appear.” And it was so.

Genesis 1:9, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

On the third day of creation, God speaks and the chaotic waters of verse 2 are gathered into one place so that dry land emerges. The Hebrew word for the gathered waters, yammim, means "seas," and the dry land is called erets, "earth." Ancient readers pictured the world as land rising from a surrounding sea, and this verse presents that ordering as God's deliberate act, not accident.
