Genesis 11:2 meaning and explanation

And as people journeyed eastward, they found a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there.

Genesis 11:2, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

The narrator reports what happened after the flood: humanity, still speaking one language, moved eastward and settled on a fertile plain in Shinar, the region later associated with Babylon in southern Mesopotamia. "Journeyed eastward" echoes the earlier movement east from Eden, and settling together sets up the story that follows, in which the people build a city and tower to avoid being scattered.
