The LORD, however, afflicted Pharaoh and his household with severe plagues because of Abram’s wife Sarai.

God had promised to bless Abram and curse those who cursed him, and here that promise works itself out. Abram, driven by famine into Egypt, had lied about Sarai to save his own life, and she was taken into Pharaoh's palace.
