Genesis 13:16 meaning and explanation
I will make your offspring like the dust of the earth, so that if one could count the dust of the earth, then your offspring could be counted.
Genesis 13:16, Berean Standard Bible
Explanation preview
Abram has just parted from Lot, who chose the well watered Jordan plain, and God now speaks to Abram directly, renewing the promise of land and descendants first given in chapter 12. The comparison to the dust of the earth uses the Hebrew word aphar, meaning loose soil or dust, a picture of something too numerous to count.
