Genesis 14:20 meaning and explanation

and blessed be God Most High, who has delivered your enemies into your hand.” Then Abram gave Melchizedek a tenth of everything.

Genesis 14:20, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Melchizedek, king of Salem and priest of God Most High, has just met Abram returning from the rescue of Lot. In verse 20 he finishes his blessing by praising God, not Abram, for the victory: the Hebrew word for "delivered" is magan, meaning to give over or hand up, and it credits God with handing the enemy kings to Abram.
