Genesis 14:21 meaning and explanation

The king of Sodom said to Abram, “Give me the people, but take the goods for yourself.”

Genesis 14:21, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

After Abram rescues Lot and defeats the four kings, the king of Sodom meets him in the King's Valley and makes a businesslike offer: return the people taken from Sodom, and keep the recovered goods as payment. In the ancient setting, a victor normally claimed the spoils, so the offer sounds generous.
