Genesis 25:26 meaning and explanation

After this, his brother came out grasping Esau’s heel; so he was named Jacob. And Isaac was sixty years old when the twins were born.

Genesis 25:26, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Rebekah has just given birth to twins, and the second child emerges gripping his brother's heel, as though trying to pull him back. The narrator gives the name its meaning: Jacob sounds like the Hebrew word for heel, and the name will later carry the sense of one who supplants.
