Jacob's sons have just heard that Shechem, a Hivite prince, has violated their sister Dinah, and Hamor has proposed marriage and intermarriage between the two peoples. The narrator states plainly that the brothers answer deceitfully, and gives the reason: Shechem had defiled Dinah.
