Genesis 49:19 meaning and explanation

Gad will be attacked by raiders, but he will attack their heels.

Genesis 49:19, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Jacob is near death in Egypt, and in this chapter he gathers his twelve sons to speak a word over each of them about “the days to come.” His saying about Gad is short and vivid: raiders will press in on him, but he will strike back at their heels, that is, he will fight off the attackers and hold his ground. The name Gad sounds like the Hebrew word for “troop” or “raid,” which may be why Jacob plays on raiding here.
