Hebrews 11:20 meaning and explanation

By faith Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau concerning the future.

Hebrews 11:20, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

The writer is recalling Genesis 27, where Isaac, old and nearly blind, pronounces blessings on his sons Jacob and Esau. In that story Isaac is deceived and the family is torn, yet the author of Hebrews reads the scene through the lens of faith: Isaac trusted that God's promise to Abraham would carry on through his descendants, so he spoke words about their future that he could not see fulfilled.
