Hebrews 11:19 meaning and explanation

Abraham reasoned that God could raise the dead, and in a sense, he did receive Isaac back from death.

Hebrews 11:19, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

The writer is describing Abraham's state of mind as he climbed toward Moriah with Isaac, the son through whom God had promised countless descendants. Since God's promise could not fail, Abraham concluded that God was able to raise the dead, and the author adds that figuratively he did receive Isaac back when the angel stopped the knife.
