Hosea 10:5 meaning and explanation

The people of Samaria will fear for the calf of Beth-aven. Indeed, its people will mourn with its idolatrous priests— those who rejoiced in its glory— for it has been taken from them into exile.

Hosea 10:5, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Hosea is speaking to the northern kingdom of Israel, called here by its capital Samaria. Beth-aven means "house of wickedness," a mocking name for Bethel, "house of God," where Jeroboam had set up a golden calf for worship (1 Kings 12:28-29).
