Hosea 2:5 meaning and explanation

For their mother has played the harlot and has conceived them in disgrace. For she thought, ‘I will go after my lovers, who give me bread and water, wool and linen, oil and drink.’

Hosea 2:5, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

In this verse the LORD continues his legal case against Israel, pictured as an unfaithful wife. The "mother" is the nation itself, and her "children" are the individual Israelites; their disgrace is that they were conceived in the nation's idolatry.
