Jeremiah 3:1 meaning and explanation

“If a man divorces his wife and she leaves him to marry another, can he ever return to her? Would not such a land be completely defiled? But you have played the harlot with many lovers— and you would return to Me?” declares the LORD.

Jeremiah 3:1, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

The LORD speaks through Jeremiah to the people of Judah, using a legal image from Deuteronomy 24, where a divorced woman who remarries cannot return to her first husband. The point is that Israel's unfaithfulness has been far worse: she has played the harlot with many lovers, running after other gods at every high place.
