Isaiah 1:29 meaning and explanation

Surely you will be ashamed of the sacred oaks in which you have delighted; you will be embarrassed by the gardens that you have chosen.

Isaiah 1:29, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Isaiah is speaking to Judah in the eighth century BC, and this verse falls in the closing oracle of judgment. The sacred oaks and gardens were sites of Canaanite worship, places where the people had gone to offer sacrifice and seek fertility, and the Hebrew word for the gardens suggests something set apart for pagan ritual.
