Isaiah 1:7 meaning and explanation

Your land is desolate; your cities are burned with fire. Foreigners devour your fields before you— a desolation demolished by strangers.

Isaiah 1:7, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Isaiah speaks to Judah and Jerusalem in the eighth century BC, and here he describes the covenant curse already falling on them: invaded land, burned cities, foreign armies eating the produce of their fields while they watch. The Hebrew word for desolate carries the sense of a horror that stuns onlookers.
