Isaiah 11:9 meaning and explanation

They will neither harm nor destroy on all My holy mountain, for the earth will be full of the knowledge of the LORD as the sea is full of water.

Isaiah 11:9, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Isaiah has just pictured the peaceable kingdom, where predator and prey lie down together and a child leads wild animals. Verse 9 gives the reason for that peace: "They will neither harm nor destroy on all My holy mountain." God is speaking, and "My holy mountain" means Zion, the place of His dwelling, though the promise widens to fill "the earth." The ground of safety is not human effort but the knowledge of the LORD, an intimate knowing of God Himself, spreading as thoroughly as water fills the sea.
