Isaiah 20:6 meaning and explanation

And on that day the dwellers of this coastland will say, ‘See what has happened to our source of hope, those to whom we fled for help and deliverance from the king of Assyria! How then can we escape?’”

Isaiah 20:6, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

The speakers are the people of the coastland, the coastal towns of Philistia and Judah near the sea, responding to Assyria's capture of Ashdod. They had looked to Egypt and Cush as a shield against Assyrian power, and Isaiah's three years of walking stripped and barefoot had shown that those allies would themselves be led away captive.
