Isaiah 21:1 meaning and explanation

This is the burden against the Desert by the Sea: Like whirlwinds sweeping through the Negev, an invader comes from the desert, from a land of terror.

Isaiah 21:1, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Isaiah 21 opens a series of oracles, and verse 1 introduces the first: a "burden," the prophetic word of judgment, against the "Desert by the Sea." This is likely a poetic name for Babylon, which lay near rivers and marshes in southern Mesopotamia, and the chapter goes on to announce its fall in verse 9. The prophet speaks as one receiving a vision from God.
