Explanation preview
God has just promised to replace Shebna, the palace steward, with Eliakim son of Hilkiah, giving him the key of the house of David (verses 20 to 22). Verse 24 pictures Eliakim as a peg driven into a firm wall, and on that peg hangs the whole weight of his father's house: descendants, offshoots and every small vessel, from bowls to jars.
