Isaiah 28:25 meaning and explanation

When he has leveled its surface, does he not sow caraway and scatter cumin? He plants wheat in rows and barley in plots, and rye within its border.

Isaiah 28:25, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Isaiah has just pronounced judgment on Ephraim's drunkards and Jerusalem's scoffers, and he now turns to a farming picture to defend God's way of teaching. The plowman does not plow forever; once the ground is leveled he sows each crop differently, caraway and cumin scattered, wheat in rows, barley and rye in their own plots.
