Isaiah 29:16 meaning and explanation

You have turned things upside down, as if the potter were regarded as clay. Shall what is formed say to him who formed it, “He did not make me”? Can the pottery say of the potter, “He has no understanding”?

Isaiah 29:16, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Isaiah is speaking to Jerusalem, called Ariel, whose people have been going through the motions of worship while their hearts are far from God. In verse 15 they try to hide their plans from the LORD, and verse 16 exposes the absurdity of that: they have flipped the order of creation, treating the potter as though he were the clay.
