Isaiah 45:9 meaning and explanation

Woe to him who quarrels with his Maker— one clay pot among many. Does the clay ask the potter, ‘What are you making?’ Does your work say, ‘He has no hands’?

Isaiah 45:9, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

The LORD has just named Cyrus, a pagan king, as his instrument to free Israel, and verse 9 answers the objection that rises in hearers who find this plan unacceptable. Using the image of a clay pot among many, God says it is absurd for the pot to interrogate the potter about what he is making, or for the work to claim its maker has no hands.
