Isaiah 30:17 meaning and explanation

A thousand will flee at the threat of one; at the threat of five you will all flee, until you are left alone like a pole on a mountaintop, like a banner on a hill.

Isaiah 30:17, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

The LORD is speaking through Isaiah to Judah, who has trusted Egypt for protection instead of asking God (verses 1 to 5). Here in verse 17 He pictures the result of that misplaced trust: the nation's own army will collapse so completely that a mere threat will scatter them, until Jerusalem stands as bare as a lone pole or a signal banner on a hilltop.
