Isaiah 5:21 meaning and explanation
Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes and clever in their own sight.
Isaiah 5:21, Berean Standard Bible
Explanation preview
Isaiah has just sung the parable of the vineyard, where God's people produced sour fruit instead of justice, and he now pronounces a series of woes on the attitudes that ruined them. This short woe targets self-sufficiency: people who trust their own judgment and consider themselves clever, rather than measuring themselves by God's instruction, which verse 24 says they have rejected.
