Isaiah 5:22 meaning and explanation
Woe to those who are heroes in drinking wine and champions in mixing strong drink,
Isaiah 5:22, Berean Standard Bible
Explanation preview
Isaiah is speaking to the people of Judah in a series of “woes,” and this one targets men who take pride in their capacity for drink. The Hebrew word for “heroes” is gibborim, normally used of mighty warriors, and here it is turned ironically: strength that should defend the community is spent on wine and mixed drink.
