Isaiah 54:4 meaning and explanation

Do not be afraid, for you will not be put to shame; do not be intimidated, for you will not be humiliated. For you will forget the shame of your youth and will remember no more the reproach of your widowhood.

Isaiah 54:4, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

In this chapter the LORD speaks to Jerusalem as a woman who has been barren, deserted and widowed, an image of the city after exile and of a people who felt abandoned by God. The shame of youth likely recalls the nation's early failures, and the reproach of widowhood recalls the years without a husband, that is, without the LORD's protecting presence.
