Isaiah 9:4 meaning and explanation
For as in the day of Midian You have shattered the yoke of their burden, the bar across their shoulders, and the rod of their oppressor.
Isaiah 9:4, Berean Standard Bible
Explanation preview
Isaiah speaks to Judah and the northern tribes under the shadow of Assyria, and he looks back to Gideon's night battle in Judges 7, when God routed the Midianites with trumpets, jars and torches rather than a strong army. The yoke, bar and rod are the wooden tools a conqueror lays on a defeated people, and the verse says God himself breaks them.
