James 4:11 meaning and explanation

Brothers, do not slander one another. Anyone who speaks against his brother or judges him speaks against the law and judges it. And if you judge the law, you are not a practitioner of the law, but a judge of it.

James 4:11, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

James is writing to scattered believers whose communities were marked by quarrels and pride, and here he turns to how they speak about one another. The Greek word katalaleo means to speak against or defame someone, and James says such speech attacks the law itself.
