Jeremiah 3:19 meaning and explanation

Then I said, ‘How I long to make you My sons and give you a desirable land, the most beautiful inheritance of all the nations!’ I thought you would call Me ‘Father’ and never turn away from following Me.

Jeremiah 3:19, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

In this chapter God speaks through Jeremiah to a people who had broken covenant with him, pictured as an unfaithful wife. Verse 19 voices God's own longing: he wanted to adopt Israel as sons and give them a beautiful inheritance, and he expected the intimacy of a child calling him "Father." The Hebrew word for "long" expresses a settled intention, and "sons" carries the legal sense of full family standing.
