Jeremiah 34:9 meaning and explanation
that each man should free his Hebrew slaves, both male and female, and no one should hold his fellow Jew in bondage.
Jeremiah 34:9, Berean Standard Bible
Explanation preview
Under siege by Babylon, King Zedekiah and the people of Jerusalem made a covenant to proclaim liberty, and this verse gives its terms: every Hebrew slave, male and female, was to be freed, and no one was to hold a fellow Jew in bondage. The law of Moses already required release in the seventh year (Exodus 21:2; Deuteronomy 15:12), so the covenant recalled what God had commanded.
