Jeremiah 44:26 meaning and explanation

Nevertheless, hear the word of the LORD, all you people of Judah living in Egypt: Behold, I have sworn by My great name, says the LORD, that never again will any man of Judah living in the land of Egypt invoke My name or say, ‘As surely as the Lord GOD lives.’

Jeremiah 44:26, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Jeremiah is speaking to the Jews who fled to Egypt after Jerusalem fell, and in verse 26 God answers their defiant vow to keep burning incense to the Queen of Heaven. Swearing by His great name, the LORD declares that no Judean in Egypt will again use His name in an oath, "As surely as the Lord GOD lives." The phrase carries the sense of invoking Him as witness and giver of life, and its withdrawal means the covenant relationship is suspended for this community.
